The guests have all gone, the kid’s are in bed,  the food has been put away, and the dishes are…well, they’re in the process of being done (never was my favorite chore),and the faint murmur of Christmas songs drift across the room. Ordinarily, I try to put off Christmas songs until we are firmly entrenched in the season, but this year finds me needing their joviality and solace………

What a very eventful -albeit heart breaking- year this has been for my family. This was the first Thanksgiving we had without my Father-In-Law, and the absence of his presence was most notable, to say the least. Noone said so, but you could feel it; especially when my seat at the family dinner was moved to the head of the table, where my Father In Law used to sit. He was such a great man, and I’m not sure I’m worthy of it, you know? That’s a heckuva seat to try and fill, I’m not sure I can do it. Anyway, I suppose I should be thankful for the time I had with him, for the influence he had on me, and the impression he made on my children, and I am, but I just can’t help but feel this…….emptiness. Then I found this, on my way to trying to find an appropriate prayer (just in case I was asked to do the prayer); “Do not get tired of doing what is good. Don’t get discouraged and give up, for we will reap a harvest of blessing at the appropriate time.”
– Galatians 6:9

It gave me cause for thought, because I don’t think my F.I.L would have wanted us to be sad on this day, I think he would have wanted us to be happy, laughing and full of love for each other. He would have wanted us to do something good, something virtuous and worth while, not wring our hands and stifle back tears. it’s hard to do that, especially when you love someone as much as we love him, but maybe this is our mission, and  maybe I’m supposed to be at the head of that table……Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

The Canticle of the Creatures

Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord,
All praise is Yours, all glory, honor and blessings.
To you alone, Most High, do they belong;
no mortal lips are worthy to pronounce Your Name.

We praise You, Lord, for all Your creatures,
especially for Brother Sun,
who is the day through whom You give us light.
And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendor,
of You Most High, he bears your likeness.

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Moon and the stars,
in the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair.

We praise You, Lord, for Brothers Wind and Air,
fair and stormy, all weather’s moods,
by which You cherish all that You have made.

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Water,
so useful, humble, precious and pure.

We praise You, Lord, for Brother Fire,
through whom You light the night.
He is beautiful, playful, robust, and strong.

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Earth,
who sustains us
with her fruits, colored flowers, and herbs.

We praise You, Lord, for those who pardon,
for love of You bear sickness and trial.
Blessed are those who endure in peace,
by You Most High, they will be crowned.

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Death,
from whom no-one living can escape.
Woe to those who die in their sins!
Blessed are those that She finds doing Your Will.
No second death can do them harm.

We praise and bless You, Lord, and give You thanks,
and serve You in all humility.
